The Moderator's Biography

Evan Dyer

Evan Dyer was born in Canada and grew up mostly in England (and for a couple of years in Turkey).
He did his undergraduate studies in History at the University of London (King's College, LSE and the School of Oriental and African Studies). He began his career in journalism in Argentina, where he spent five years working as a freelance correspondent filing for outlets such as The Guardian, The Times of London, BBC Radio, CBC Radio, CBS, and NPR, returning to Canada in 1995. After completing a Masters degree in journalism at Carelton he joined the CBC in 1997 as a reporter. He has since covered news and also produced documentaries for most of CBC's major radio and television shows including The National, The House, The Current and Dispatches. He was one of the first journalists to pay attention to the disappearance of Maher Arar, and eventually won a New York Festival award for his coverage of the Arar story. In recent years he has also produced a number of CBC Radio
documentaries from places such as Turkey, Mexico, Peru and Argentina. He has a long-standing interest in Middle Eastern history and Mideast affairs.
